Fosters Fish and Chips have had a shop on Chorley Hall Lane in Alderley Edge since 1994 when Gaz and his father opened it on a whim and learnt as they went.
The shop has now won the quality award for the last 7 years. People drive from miles around to experience a good fish and chip shop and the Alderley Edge shop went from strength to strength.
For the tenth anniversary, they ran a £1 fish and chips offer to say thank you to their customers for the support they had given. The queue went around the block.
When Fetch Didsbury got an email earlier in the year from Kath Foster we were more than excited. The plan was to open a restaurant in Didsbury in the old Bottoms Up shop which is still shown on google maps street view and to open in September. We promised our usual free online promotion and a visit to take some photos and do a write up.
So off we went one lunch time to check out what the Didsbury Fosters Fish had to offer over other options for Fish and Chips in Didsbury. The outside of the shop is clean and modern. Black and white with large windows. We were met with a smile and asked where we wanted to sit. The shop is full of fun little touches like a real red phone box for a cloakroom and the iCod (iPad) for controlling the music, but polished. Everyone knows their place. Things run smoothly and it has it's own character, for instance the staff wear t-shirt with slogans like "Not tonight, I've got a haddock" and "In Cod We Trust" on the back.
Looking at the menu, and it being lunch, it was decided to try the lunch time special. Half a cod, half size chips, a drink and bread and butter for £5.50. We were assured that it wouldn't be a small lunch, and it wasn't.
The bread and butter comes on it's own wooden board. The batter is light and doesn't have that slimy inside you sometimes get with battered fish. The chips were well cooked in good oil and although I usually avoid them, the mushy peas were pretty good too and may have converted me!
Incase you still need convincing to try Fosters Fish out, if you dine in, get a standard meal and are still hungry, you get more chips for free. Really.
If you still need convincing, you get a chocolate fish with your bill and the portions are enormous whether you eat in or takeaway.
Try them out. You're likely to love it and start doing fish fridays again.
