A man visiting the UK to learn English was attacked and robbed in East Didsbury.
At about 4am on Sunday 10 July 2011, the 21-year-old man was walking along Parrs Wood Road near the junction with Kingsway.
He was suddenly approached by the offender who punched him several times, forcing him to the floor. Using a knife he then caused a cut to the victim's mouth.
The offender rifled through the victims pockets and stole cash and a phone. He then left, but the victim was not sure in which direction.
He is described as being a black man, but there is no further description.
The victim, who is from Saudi Arabia and studying English in the UK over the summer, has been released from hospital.
Detective Constable Mark Armitt said: "This was a robbery carried out with an unprovoked attack; clearly the offender does not think twice about using violence to get what he wants.
"This was clearly a shocking experience for the victim who is only in this country to learn English.
"We would like to remind residents and visitors that incidents of this nature around Didsbury are rare.
"Our appeal is to anyone in the area who may have seen anything that may help our inquiry."
