Didsbury Arts Festival Competition
Film competition a first for Didsbury Arts Festival 2011 opens on 4th April.
Didsbury Arts Festival has announced an exciting, new addition to its 2011 programme with plans for its first ever short film competition.
The event, intended as a regular fixture on the annual DAF programme, will provide a showcase for the creative talents of Didsbury’s budding film makers, writers, actors and producers.
Each year, organisers will pick two film categories for their ‘Tributes’ short film competition. This year’s chosen genres are comedy and horror.
With an innovative twist on standard short film festivals, competitors are asked to submit films, no longer than five minutes, which pay homage to famous filmic styles and directors of comedy or horror. This could include anything from classic Monty Python to the master of suspense – Alfred Hitchcock!
The shortlisted films will be screened during festival week (24 September to 1 October) and the winners announced on the final day of the film programme. The judging panel will include local film festival organisers, film and TV makers and the final outcome will also be influenced by an audience vote.
The film competition is the brainchild of Didsbury businesswoman and film maker, Janet Harrison. Earlier this month, Janet launched Manchester’s first ever Cofilmic Comedy Film Festival which will be held at the city’s Comedy Store from 31 October to 1 November. The winning film in the DAF Tribute to Comedy category will be shown at the Comedy Store during the Comedy Film Festival.
DAF Director, Maria Stripling, said: ‘The idea behind the short film competition is to bring something new to Didsbury Arts Festival and to exploit the wealth of talent in the local area. The event will be a real highlight.
‘For new film makers, breaking into the industry is notoriously difficult. This event will provide an opportunity for like-minded people to work together and inspire each other to make their projects happen.’
A launch and ‘mingle’ event is being held on 4 April for those people who need others to make their project happen. This will take place from 6.30 pm to 9 pm at The Slug & Lettuce, Wilmslow Road, Didsbury. Actors, directors, producers and film makers are invited to attend in order to discuss their ideas and bring a team together.
Competition entry submissions open on 4 April and close on 30 June. For details visit: www.didsburyartsfestival.org
