Rory's Bench in Fletcher Moss Park

Everyone who has walked around Fletcher Moss Park in Didsbury has probably seen and made comment on it, and many of you will have sat on it, but until I wrote this update I knew very little about it.

One of the benches located between the Wilmslow Road tennis courts and the Alpine Tea Room cafe stands out from the rest. It's seat and backrest are held in place by a bat and gargoylesque creature who seem perfectly content to be taking the weight of the huge carved slabs of wood in place.

Rory's Bench in Fletcher Moss Park

The bench was created by sculptor Jason Thompson after Rory McGowan, a pupil from Parrs Wood High School was knocked down and killed on Palatine Road in October 2004. It features many of Rory's favourite characters from various tv series and books including Bender from the cartoon Futurama.

As a tribute to Rory, his friends at school raised the money to have the bench made with a concert and a doughnut eating competition.

The bench now appears in photographs all over the internet including on the Qype business listing for Fletcher Moss Park.

A truly amazing bench brought about as a fitting tribute to Rory McGowan.
